What are producers ?
Plants or Algae, these can be found at the start of every food chain
Why are producers important ?
They use photosynthesis
- the only group of organisms that can create their own organic material
What is a primary consumer ?
The first thing to eat something
Let’s say the food chain is
Grass—- grasshopper— blue bird—- snake
The grape hopper is the primary consumer
What does everything food chain start with ?
A producer
Such as a plant or algae
What eats a producer ?
A primary consumer
What is the primary consumer eaten by ?
The secondary consumer
An animal that eats a primary consumer
What is the secondary consumer eaten by ?
A tertiary consumer
What are the populations of prey and predators ?
Interdependent to each other
What happens to the number of predators and prey ?
They will rise and fall in cycles
If the population of prey increases then the population of predator …?
The predator population will have more food so after some time the predator population increases
The prey population will then fall
The predator population has less food so its population will gradually fall
How can we better illustrate a food chain ?
We can combine them to make a food web
Why do animals feed on more than 1 type of source/ species ?
To reduce interdependence on that species or source
What would happen if primary consumers decreased ?
The predators that feed in them would decrease due to a lack of food source
What would happen if a secondary consumer decreased ?
The number of primary consumers wound increase as there is a lack of predator
