Why is the TAM used?
It is used to maintain a patient’s upper airway
What are the indications?
For patient’s who are unable to maintain airway patency
What are the contraindications?
Nil in this setting
What are the precautions?
Patient’s with a potential C-spine injury
What is the procedure for the TAM?
Head tilt, jaw thrust, open mouth
Why do you thrust the jaw?
It moves the tongue anteriorly, minimising any obstruction
How do you head tilt?
Use two hands to tilt the head in order to open the airway
How do you thrust the jaw?
List from under the angle of the jaw on both side, this causes the jaw to thrust open and forward
How do you open the mouth?
Use the tips of both thumbs to open the mouth to visualise the oropharynx
What are the two additional information?
The recovery position is also a form of basic airway management and the trachea is soft and pliable in infants and it may become occluded with excessive head tilt
Where do you use padding?
Under the shoulders to keep the head tilted
What is the next step if the patient has an expected c-spine injury?
DAM
What is different with DAM in comparison to TAM?
No head tilt
