Urodynamics Flashcards
Urodynamic tests
techniques which measure the bladder, sphincters & uretha and how well they are at storing and releasing urine
What can urodynamics find?
They can show whether the bladder is having involuntary contractions, causing urine to leak
Cystometry
measures how much urine the bladder can hold and the pressure in the bladder. Can be used to diagnose overactive bladders and incontinence.
Uroflowmetry
A test which measures how much and how fast urine leaves the bladder. It’s measured in two parts:
measures average rate of flow
measures top rate of flow
Can be used to show blockages (e.g. enlarged prostate)
Voiding pressure study
A catheter and manometer are used to measure the pressure in the bladder when urinating & the urine flow rate. This can help to find a blockage in the bladder (from prostate enlargement).
Limitations of voiding pressure studies
Pain
burning sensation
blood in the urine
