Unit 8: Introduction to Ecology Flashcards
Biotic Factors
Living organisms in an ecosystem
ex. trees, animals, plants, leaves, poop, bones
Abiotic Factors
Nonliving organisms in an ecosystem
ex. rocks, water, sun, clouds, temperature
What are the levels of an ecosystem (after organ systems)?
Biosphere, ecosystem, community, population, organism
Organism
Individual living thing
Population
Group organisms of one type that live in the same area
Community
Popultations that live together along with other living things
Ecosystem
Community + its nonliving surroundings
Biosphere
Part of Earth that contains all ecosystems
Autotrophs
Self-feeding organisms
Carbohydrates
- Store energy
- Provide structure/building material for plants
- Made during photosynthesis
- Energy stored in “bonds” between molecules
Photosynthesis
Chemical reaction autotrophs use sun’s energy made carbs
What is the process of photosynthesis?
- Carbon dioxide enter through leaves
- Water enters through roots
- Sunlight absorbed though plant
- Plant releases oxygen + sugars
What is the chemical equation of photosynthesis?
CO(2) + H(2)O –> C(6)H(12)O(6) + O(2)
Refer to Photosynethesis Lesson worksheet
What happens to th rate of photosynthesis if light intensity is inceased?
Light energy increased photosynthesis faster because light energy needed break molecules bonded together
Why do we need to convert carb energy to ATP?
Carb energy = not usuable energy to Cellular Respiration converts carbs (glucose) to ATP!!
