what ethical and cultural issues are there surrounding technology?
-access to inappropriate or illegal content
-safety decisions by self driving vehicles
-social media sites that can lead to cyber bullying, trolling, etc

-websites can track users using their IP address
-social media activity and information is being used for things that weren’t previously considered
-threats such as viruses, farming and phishing can be used to get personal data without permission
what environmental issues are there surrounding technology?
-there is an increases in e waste and excessive landfill which leach toxins into the air, ground and water
-a growing need for earth metals increases the mining. this also uses a lot of energy
-manufacturers have created intentionally limited lifespans for devices so they are replaced more often
what is the data protection act 2018?
states that data must be:
-fairly and lawfully processed
-used for specific purposes only
-adequate, relevant and not excessive
-not kept longer than necessary
-kept secure
what is the computer misuse act 1990?
this bans:
-unauthorised access to computer material
-unauthorised access with intent to commit or facilitate a crime
-unauthorised modification of computer material
it is also illegal to make, supply or obtain anything that can be used in these offences, including producing or distributing malware
what is the copyright, designs and patents act 1988?
this was designed to prevent the works of companies or individuals from being illegally used, copied or distributed
what is a software license?
a contract between the user and developer/owner that grants permission to user the software under given conditions
these conditions may specify a time limit or limitations such and non-commercial use only
what is open source software?
licensed but free to use
the source code can be viewed an edited
any derivatives of the work must also be made as open source software
what is proprietary software?
created and sold by companies as a license
you do not own the software or it’s copyright, only a license to use it
you don’t get access to the source code to modify it
eg. microsoft office
what is freeware?
free, but requires a license which commonly restricts its use and distribution like proprietary software
