HIV virus binds to CD4 receptors, which are found on T-helper cells and macrophages. The viral envelope fuses with the cell membrane and the viral RNA enters the cell. RNA is converted into viral DNA by the enzyme ‘reverse transcriptase’. Using ‘integrase’, it integrates into the host cell DNA and forces the host cell to produce viral RNA and proteins. It assembles in the cytoplasm and buds off, killing more T-cells as the viral load increases.
