1.6 Mitosis & the cell cycle Flashcards
(11 cards)
What are chromosomes made of?
DNA, which is wound around histone proteins.
What is a chromatin?
When the chromosomes are unwound single structures and are not visible in a cell that is not dividing.
What happens before cell division?
The DNA replicates so each chromosome consists of two identical DNA molecules.
Where do two identical molecules of DNA join?
The centromere.
What does the chromatin do at the beginning of cell division?
Condenses. It coils so tightly that the chromosomes become visible.
The chromatids in one chromosome are called what? Are they genetically identical?
Sister chromatids and are genetically identical.
Do homologous pairs have identical DNA to each other?
No.
Why are they termed homologous?
Because they are the same size and shape and carry the same genes in the same order at the same gene locus.
What can haploid cells divide by?
Only via mitosis.
What can diploid cells divide by?
By either mitosis or meiosis.
What are the four stages of mitosis?
Prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase.
