ὅτι μὲν ὑμεῖς, ὦ ἄνδρες Ἀθηναῖοι, πεπόνθατε ὑπὸ τῶν ἐμῶνκατηγόρων, οὐκ οἶδα: ἐγὼ δ᾽ οὖνκαὶ αὐτὸς ὑπ᾽ αὐτῶν ὀλίγου ἐμαυτοῦ ἐπελαθόμην, οὕτω πιθανῶς ἔλεγον. καίτοι ἀληθές γε ὡς ἔπος εἰπεῖν οὐδὲν εἰρήκασιν. μάλιστα δὲ αὐτῶν ἓν ἐθαύμασα τῶν πολλῶν ὧν ἐψεύσαντο, τοῦτοἐν ᾧ ἔλεγον ὡς χρῆν ὑμᾶς εὐλαβεῖσθαι μὴ ὑπ᾽ ἐμοῦ ἐξαπατηθῆτε ὡς δεινοῦ ὄντος λέγειν.

Answer 1

What you, O men of Athens, have suffered from my accusers, I do not know: even I myself, nearly forgot my own identity, so persuasively did they speak. And yet, so to speak, they have said nearly nothing true. Although they told many lies, I was especially amazed by one of them; the one in which they said that you must be cautious and not to let yourselves be deceived by me, since I have a cunning/clever way of speaking.

For not being ashamed that they will immediately be refuted by me, when I by no means show myself to be a clever speaker, seemed to me to be the most shameless part of their conduct, unless they call he who speaks the truth a clever speaker: For if they say this/this is what they mean then I would agree that I am an orator, but not by their fashion. Now they, as I say, have said little or nothing true— but you will hear the entire truth from me. Not however, men of Athens, in fine phrases of speech like theirs
