1.7 - Enzyme Action Flashcards
(10 cards)
What are enzymes?
Globular proteins that act as catalysts
What is a catalyst?
They alter the rate of a chemical reaction without undergoing permanent changes themselves
Many reactions require what?
An initial amount of energy to start
What is the activation energy?
The minimum amount of energy needed for a reaction to start
What do enzymes do to the activation energy?
Lower it
A specific region of the enzyme in functional called what?
Active site
The molecule on which the enzymes act on is called what?
Substrate
When the substrate binds with the enzyme it s called what?
Enzyme substrate complex
What does the induced fit model propose?
That the active sight forms as the enzyme and substrate interact
What does the enzyme do in the induced fit model?
Moulds itself around the substrate in the way that a glove moulds itself to the shape of the hand.
