Define what web 2.0 is?

A

The concept of web 2.0 allows the information flow back and forth compared to the traditional method of just receiving information. Web 2.0 can also be known as social media, and social media is made up of social networks where people come together through similar interests and can communicate throughout the world via this means of communication.

Name some of the types of new media.

A

File hosting service - can hold and store large files. e.g. Flickr hosts images and videos.
Dynamic media sharing (video sharing) - Websites that allow people to share their video clips to private groups or to the public. e.g. Youtube.
Information/Content sharing (blogs) - 1994, Justin Hall first blogger. Where people can write and share opinions and links to other sites.
Social bookmarking - Saving links to websites and posting them on a site with a tag to describe it. e.g. Pinterest.
Social Network - Social networks are websites that bring together people with similar interests through social relations. e.g. Facebook.
Microblogging - A form of blogging with restricted characters, typically 140 characters or less, such as Twitter.
Collaboration services - a website that uses a database to allow users to collaboratively edit the content. e.g. Wikipedia.

How does a social network operate?

A

A social network is made up of individuals or organisations called ‘nodes’, they are tied together through several different means such as friendship, business relationships or similar interests. An example is Facebook.
