How did crime levels change over the industrial period?

A

For the first few decades, crime levels remained similar to what they were before. Crime rates then began to increase as a result of WW1 and WW2. Even after the world wars, crime rates are still increasing.

A

Car crime… duh. Laws had to be passed to combat the increasing amount of car crime.

  • Fixed roadside cameras (not really a driving regulation so fair enough if you didn’t get it)

A

As a result of WW2, racial. religion and hate crimes became more common. This is because many people from across the British commonwealth came to Britain after the war.

A

The race relation acts were established through the mid and late 1900s.

A

The race relation act forbade the denial of hotel accommodation, jobs or access to leisure due to colour of skin/race.

Who was Philip Lawrence?

A

Philip Lawrence was a 19 year old black teenager who was murdered at a bus stop. His family had to try very hard to get the police to investigate the crime, and the murderers were found 19 years later.

A

Around the year 2000, a law was passed that allowed judges to make harsher sentences for crimes if the crime was based on race, religion, sexuality etc.

A

The first drugs were made illegal in the early 20th century - just after WW1.

A

Drug consumption led to an increase in crime because the drug takers would often resort to crime to obtain the money required to fuel their addiction e.g. theft.

A

When drugs became illegal, the smuggling of drugs became a somewhat common crime that was very profitable.

A

Once cyber-crime was included in crime statistics, the amount of crimes committed doubled (recorded in 2015)
