H. Hoover
U.S. President during the start of the Great Depression; didn’t do much to fix it.
Franklin D. Roosevelt
U.S. President who helped fight the Great Depression with the New Deal.
Great Depression
A time in the 1930s when many people lost jobs, money, and homes.
WW2
A big war from 1939–1945; the U.S. joined in 1941, helping the economy recover.
“Hands off” – Laissez-faire
When the government doesn’t get involved in the economy.
Rugged Individualism
The idea that people should solve their own problems without government help.
Hoover v FDR
Hoover wanted little government help; FDR wanted the government to take action.
New Deal
The New Deal was FDR’s plan to fight the Great Depression by creating jobs, helping the poor, and fixing the economy.
New Deal Programs
Government programs that gave jobs, built things, and helped people during the Depression.
Social Security
A program that gives money to retired, disabled, or unemployed people.
FHA
(Federal Housing Administration) – Helped people get loans to buy homes.
TVA
(Tennessee Valley Authority) – Built dams and gave electricity and jobs to the South.
FDIC
(Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) – Protected people’s money in banks.
SEC
(Securities and Exchange Commission) – Watches the stock market to stop cheating.
Repatriation
When the U.S. sent Mexican-Americans (even citizens) back to Mexico during the Depression.
Hooverville
Camps where homeless people lived during the Depression, named after President Hoover.
Dust Bowl
Huge dust storms in the Midwest that ruined farms and forced people to move.
The Great Gatsby
A famous novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald (1925)
