Notes-35 Flashcards
Plant anatomy
study of internal structure of plants
Ex: cells, tissue
Plant morphology
study of external structure of plants
Ex: parts of flower
Angiosperms
flowering plants
2 types of angiosperm
monocot- 1 seed leave
dicot- 2 seed leave
2 basic systems of plants
Root system & shoot system(stems, leaves, & flower)
Xylem
conveys water & dissolved minerals to the shoots
Phloem
conveys food from shoots to roots & other non photosynthetic parts; and from storage roots to actively growing shoots
Roots depend on shoots for-
sugar & other organic nutrients
Shoots depend on roots for-
minerals, water, & support
Root system
anchors plant, absorbs & conducts water & nutrients, & stores food
2 major types of root systems
taproot & fibrous root
Taproot system
- dicots
- 1 large vertical root produces many smaller secondary roots
- provides anchorage
- some are modified to store large amount of reserve food
Fibrous root system
- monocots
- mat of threadlike roots spread below soil surface
- provides extensive exposure to soil water & minerals
- roots concentrated in upper cm of soil to avoid soil erosion
Root hairs
- enhances ability to absorb water
- increase surface area of root
- numerous near root tips
Mycorrhizae
- also enhance water & mineral absorption
- symbiotic associations btw roots & fungi
