Anne Hutchinson

A

Puritan settler who began preaching in her home;
Forced to leave Massachusetts because of her beliefs and dissent

She and her followers settled on an island near Providence.

The Settlement later joined William’s Providence settlement and formed the colony of Rhode Island

A

Known to the English as King Philip

He led the Wampanoag Indians in King Philip’s War

Roger Williams

A

Salem minister who disagreed with the Puritan Leaders.

He believed that the church should be separate from the colonial government and Puritan leaders should not punish people for having different beliefs.

He disagreed with the mistreatment of Indians and colony should live in peace with them.

Puritan leaders expelled him because of his dissent, he was forced to leave Massachusetts Colony

He founded a settlement called Providence where people had freedom to follow any religion

A

English Puritan leader;
Led the 2nd group of Puritans to settle the Massachusetts Colony;

Served as governor of the Massachusetts Colony

He and other Puritan Leaders had strict control over the colony life in order to create the perfect colony.
They did not welcome people who had different beliefs from their own.

What were some of the responsibilities of colonial children in New England

A

Girls helped with house chores. They prepared food, made clothing and quilts, made soap, candles, and brushes.

Boys did field work. They hunted for food, furs and hides. They cut firewood and made tools. They cleared trees and rocks from land, plowed the soil and planted crops.

How did people in New England Colonies belong to a free-market economic system

A

Free-market means colonists had freedom to choose goods & services they bought and produced. (They were free to compete and set prices for goods and services)

** Farming Industry
New England Farming traded or sold their farm surplus (livestock, grain, wool, fruit and firewood) with merchants; merchants then sold their goods at higher price to England or to other colonies

** Logging & Shipping Industry
Forest of New England provided lumber/wood to England, where there were fewer trees.
New England built and repaired ships.
1/3 of English Ships were made in New England because it was cheaper to build compared to Europe, where there’s less trees.

** Fishing & Whaling Industry
New England fishers caught more than needed;
Surplus of fishes were dried, packed & sold to other colonies and Europe.
Many whales were also caught to obtain their fatty oil that was used in lamps.i

How did the Puritans try to make their settlements in the Massachusetts Colony a “city upon a hill”

A

Puritans settled south of Salem, near the mouth of the Charles River and named it Boston, after a town in England.

“City upon a hill” represented the idea that others will see the Massachusetts Colony as an example of Christian Living

A

Africans were captured and sold as enslaved workers in the English colonists

Many enslaved Africans died during the long ocean journey to English colonies in overcrowded ships.

Due to cruelty of slave trade, New England colonists formed groups to try to end slavery

King Philip’s War

A

Metacomet is known to the English as King Philip

When more English settlers began moving onto Indian lands, Metacomet united & led the Indians to go against the colonist.

War started when the Indians attacked the Swansea town in Rhode Island. Settlers retaliated & destroyed a nearby Indian village.

Colonists named the war as King Philip’s War

War spread as far north of Maine and as far south of Connecticut. Both sides suffered terrible losses.
