2-1 Flashcards
(22 cards)
What is matter?
Anything that occupies space and has weight
What is an element?
Pure substance that cannot be broken down into other substances
What are trace elements?
Elements that humans need less than 1% of
What are 96% of living matter in our bodies?
HONC- hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon
What is an atom?
Smallest unit of an element that still has the same chemical properties
Protons?
Positive charge
Neutrons?
No charge
Electrons?
Negative charge
What is a molecule?
2 or more atoms coming together
What is a compound?
2 or more elements together in a fixed ration
Atomic #?
Number of protons and electrons
Atomic mass?
Protons + neutrons
How many electrons on 1st shelf?
2
How many electrons on 2nd shelf?
8
How many electrons on 3rd shelf?
18
What are valence electrons?
Outermost energy shell, when it is full the atom is non-reactive
What are isotypes?
Elements that have the same number of protons but different number of neutrons
What is an ionic bond?
Electrons get passed to another element
Very weak
What is a covalent bond?
Strong
Share electrons
What are polar covalent bonds?
Unequally sharing electrons (will be a charge)
What are non polar covalent bonds?
Equal sharing
What are hydrogen bonds?
Attractive interaction of a hydrogen with an electronegative atom
Weak by itself
Strong with others
