2- organ systems Flashcards
(4 cards)
Circulatory system
a transport system that moves oxygen, nutrients, hormones, immune cells, waste and heat throughout the body in one continuous loop
Artery
take blood away from heart, carrying oxygenated blood to all cells to the body, the pulmonary artery is an exception, carrying deoxygenated blood to lungs, the blood is pumped out with a lot of force, and this means the walls must be thick and muscular, to withstand the pressure being placed on them
Vein
the blood travels away from body tissues and goes from the capillaries into these blood vessels, the blood is not under much pressure, so walls do not have to be thick and muscular, blood needs to be prevented from going backwards, so special valves are in place
Capillary
when blood travels away from the heart, it enters smaller blood vessels, all tissues in the body are surrounded by a tiny network of these, allowing nutrients and gases to be delivered, while removing waste, extremely thin walls, only one cell thick, to permit substances to move into tissues
