Gilgamesh

A

search for immortality. The friendship of Gilgamesh. And Enkido causes their energy to be directed to their journey. The journey to get the bull results in Enkido’s death and Gilgamesh learns the limits of mortality. He begins his quest to find immortality. He writes his story on the wall and his art (life story) brings him immortality through his memory.

O.T. Job

A

unresolved question of justice. Satan challenges god to test job, his comforters tell him he must have sinned, and this is punishments, job says he is obedient and doesn’t deserve this. He doesn’t curse god, he just wants understanding. But he never gets understanding. Humans do not have the knowledge of god and thus must be obedient, patient, and selfless. Job accepts gods answer as we must, and feels his support for job and accepts his trials.

Odyssey

A

search for identity. WE wonder about Odysseus’ tactic in dealing with people but he is a survivor, one who fights to save his life. he is discovering himself as he goes along and is careful about revealing his identity until he is sure it will not threaten his life. he is able to preserve his identity and the epic ends showing his 3 generations choosing peace rather than war.

emphasize the doctrine of mercy and repentance.
show that we are loved and needed by our creator and that he values each of our handiworks. We feel of his love for the repentant sinner. We like to identify with the characters in these stories and feel how me must care for each of us also.
