2010 Metabolic Regulation Flashcards
(10 cards)
Euthyriod (def.)
Referring to a normal thyroid function.
Hyperthyriodism (def.)
AKA: thyroyoxicosis
A condition meaning overproduction of the thyroid hormones.
Hypothyroidism
Diminished production of the thyroid hormones..
Thyroid simulating hormone (TSH) (def.)
AKA: Thyrotropin
An endogenous substance secreted by the pituitary gland that controls the release of thyroid gland hormones and is necessary for the growth and function of the thyroid gland.
Thyroxine (T4) (def.)
The principal thyroid hormone that influences the metabolic rate.
Triiodothyronine (T3) (def.)
The secondary thyroid hormone that also affects body metabolism.
Location of the thyroid gland AKA: Adams Apple
Lies across the larynx in front of the thyroid cartilage and extends on both sides of the front of the neck.
Thyroid Gland responsibilities (3)
- Secretion of 3 hormones (T3, T4, and calcitonin) that regulate metabolism.
- Normal growth and development
- Heat regulating system
Parathyroid Gland
Located behind the thyroid gland and maintain adequate levels of calcium in ECF by mobilizing calcium from the bone.
T3 and T4
Produced in the thyroid gland through the coupling of iodine and the amino acid tyrosine. 1mg of iodine is needed per week from the diet.
