Write out the definition for the following terms:
A. Transverse wave
A wave with a direction of propagation that is perpendicular to the direction of oscillation
B. Longitudinal wave
A wave with a direction of propagation that is parallel to its direction of oscillation
C. Supersonic speed
Any speed that is faster than the speed of sound in the substance of interest
D. Sonic boom
Sound produced as a result of an object traveling at or above match 1
E. Pitch
An indication of how high or low a sound is, which is primarily determined by the frequency of sound waves
In designing a cars horn, the engineers the test the sound of the horn and decide that it is too it’s pitch is too low. To adjust the Warren, should the engineers change the electrons so as to produce the sound waves with longer or shorter wavelength
Shorter wavelengths
What is The formula for finding the speed of sound
V =(331.5 + 0.6 • Temp.)m/sec.
What is the formula for finding the frequency
frequency = speed over Wavelength
What is the speed of in for infrasonic waves
Frequencies below 20 Hz
What is the speed for ultrasonic sound waves
It’s waves with frequencies higher than 20,000 Hz
What is the range of sonic waves
20 Hz to 20,000 Hz
If a physicist takes an alarm clock and put in an airtight chamber when the chamber is sealed with still full of air the physicist is able to hear the alarm despite the fact that he is outside on the chair if the physicist then you say vacuum pump to evacuate essentially all the air out of the chamber, will the physicist still be able to hear the alarm wire why not
No. No air is in the chamber to make sound waves
Are sound waves transverse waves or longitudinal waves
Longitudinal waves
How do you find distance traveled
Distance traveled = speed of sound • Time
Sound waves are traveling through the air and suddenly run into a wall. As a sound waves travel through the wall, did they travel faster, slower, or at the same speed when they are traveling in the air?
Faster
In the situation described above what happens to the amplitude of the wave is the amplitude of the wave smaller, larger, or the same as the amplitude before the wave hit the wall
Smaller
How do you find mach
Speed traveled divided by the speed of sound
Why do jets travel at speeds of match one or higher only in sparsely populated regions
Because the boom made can damage ears and buildings
Guitar player is parking on a string if he takes his finger and Finch is the string to the neck of the guitar so that it shortens doing the strain will the pitch of the sound in knitted increase decrease or stay the same
Increase
You here to musical notes. They both have the same pitch the first is louder than the second if you compare the sound of the waves what aspects of the weave will be the same wavelength frequency speed or amplitude what aspects would be different
Wavelength frequency and speed would be the same. amplitude however would not
Tomorrow when your neighbors car is stuck through is considered system only wearing. You watch your neighbor get into the car and drive away from you heading towards the nearest place for automobile service. Compare the picture the horn before he started to drive away do you good to hear when he is driving away from me
It will be lower
You are riding your bicycle towards a stationary please car with the siren that is blaring away will the picture of the siren sound lower higher or the same as it will sound when you actually stop your bicycle assuming that the actual picture of the phone stays constant
Higher
How many decibels are in one bel
10
