2020 Mod 9 Flashcards
(29 cards)
In general what are the properties of acids?
Acid taste sour.
Acid are covalent compounds that conduct electricity when added to water.
Acid turn blue litmus paper red
In general what are the characteristics of basis
Bases taste bitter.
Bases are slippery to the touch when dissolved in water.
Bases turn red litmus paper blue
Bitter bases are blue
What is the definition of an acid
An acid is A molecule that donates protons or H positive ions
What is the definition of a base?
The base is a molecule that excepts protons or H positive ions
Some books define a base as a proton acceptor. Why is this just as correct a definition as one as the one presented in this book.
Because bases except protons or H positive ions
Hydrochloric acid
HCl
Hydrobromic acid
HBr
Hydrofluoric acid
HF
Nitric acid
HNO3
Sulfuric acid
H2SO4
Phosphoric acid
H3PO4
Carbonic acid
H2CO3
Acidic acid
C2H4O2
What unit conversions can be used as concentration units
Grams over meters cubed
moles over milliliter
A chemist wants to make a solution of 3.4 M HCl. He can find two solutions of HCl on the shelf. One has a concentration of 6.0 M, while the other is a concentration of 2.0 M. Which solution can the chemist use to make the desired acid?
The one with the higher concentration 6.0 M
Amphiprotic compounds
Compounds that can act as either an acid or a base, depending on the situation
What is an indicator
A substance that turns one color in the presence of an acid in another color in the presence of a base
What is titration
The process of slowly reacting a base of unknown concentration with an acid of known concentration (or vice versa) until just enough acid has been added to react with all of the base. this process to determine the concentration of the unknown base or acid.
If you take an H what is left?
A negative compound
What two molecules are important to remember?
H equals +1
OH equals -1
What happens to ionic compounds when they dissolve
They split into their constituent Ions
Polyprotic acid
An acid that can donate more than one H+ ion
Covalent bases reactions
Covalent bases except only one H+ ion. Diprotic and triprotic acids require more than one covalent best to except their H+ ions.
Molarity
The concentration unit that tells how many moles of a substance are in a liter of solution. It is determined by dividing the number of moles of a substance by the number of liters in a solution
