Cranial nerves Flashcards

1
Q

What are Cranial nerves?

A

They provide sensory and motor innervation to the head and neck

They have both sensory and motor components as a group.

Individually they may be completely sensory or motor, or mixed

18
Q

What Cranial Nerves are Sensory?

A

Cranial Nerves: I, II, VIII

19
Q

What Cranial Nerves are Motor?

A

Cranial Nerves: III, IV, VI, XI, XII

20
Q

What Cranial Nerves are both Sensory and Motor?

A

Cranial Nerves: V, VII, IX, X

21
Q

What does Cranial Nerve I do?

A

Special sense = involved in smelling

22
Q

What does Cranial Nerve II do?

A

The optic nerve carries special sensory afferent fibers used to provide vision.

23
Q

What does Cranial Nerve III do?

A

The oculomotor nerve has General Somatic Efferent to innervate: inferior oblique, inferior-superior-medial rectus. It also has General Visceral Efferent to innervate: sphincter pupillae muscle (parasympathetics)

24
Q

What does Cranial Nerve IV do?

A

The trochlear nerve has General Somatic Efferent and innervates the superior oblique muscle.

25
Q

What does Cranial Nerve V do?

A

The Trigeminal nerve is the main sensory innervatio to the head.

  • contains GSA fibers for sensory information of the head
  • has Bronchial Efferent fibers to give motor innervation to muscles of mastication
26
Q

What are the three divisions of the Trigeminal nerve?

A
  1. Opthalmic (V1)
  2. Maxillary (V2)
  3. Mandibular (V3)
27
Q

What does Cranial Nerve VI do?

A

The Abducens nerve carries GSE fibers to the lateral rectus muscle.

28
Q

What does Cranial Nerve VII do?

A

The Facial Nerve has

  1. Bronchial efferent fibers that innervate muscles of facial expression.
  2. Special Sensory afferent - provides taste from the anterior 2/3 of the tongue.
  3. GSA for sensation to small portion of skin around ear.
29
Q

What 2 nerves go out throught the internal acoustic meatus?

A
  1. Vestibulocochlear Nerve
  2. Facial Nerve
30
Q

What does Cranial Nerve IX do?

A

The Glossopharyngeal nerve carries:

  1. General Somatic Afferent for the posterior 1/3 of the tongue
  2. General Visceral fibers for the carotid body and carotid sinus, the pharynx
  3. Bronchial Efferent to innervate the stylopharyngeal muscle
  4. Special Sensory for taste sensation of posterior 1/3 of the tongue.
31
Q

What does Cranial Nerve X do?

A

The Vagus nerve:

  1. General Somatic Afferent: for skin sensation behind ear and dura mater
  2. General Visceral Afferent: sensory for the carotid body (chemoreceptors) and baroreceptors for the aortic arch
  3. General Visceral Efferent: parasympathetic of ANS to stimulate glands in pharynx, larynx
  4. Branchial Efferent: innervate muscles in the pharynx and larynx
32
Q

What does Cranial Nerve XI?

A

Accessory Nerve has only

Bronchial efferent fibers: innervate the trapezius and sternocleidomastoid

33
Q

What does Cranial Nerve XII do?

A

Hypoglossus Nerve has

General Somatic Efferent fibers: innervate the intrinsic muscles of the tongue and the extrinsic except for palatoglossus

34
Q

Where does the Hypoglossus exit the skull?

A

the hypoglossal canal in the occipital bone.

35
Q

Where does the optic nerve exit the skull?

A

the optic canal on the sphenoid bone

36
Q

where does the oculomotor nerve exit the skull?

A

travels through the cavernous sinus and exits through superior orbital fissure in the sphenoid bone.

37
Q

How does the trochlear nerve exit the skull?

A

through the superior orbital fissure in the sphenoid bone.

38
Q

how does the abducens exit the skull?

A

throught the superior orbital fissure in the sphenoid bone.
