21. Cestodoses of man and rodents Flashcards
(19 cards)
What is the order of Cestodoses of man and rodents?
Cyclophyllida & Pseudophyllida
What is the most common tapeworm of humans?
Hymenolepis
What is the size of Hymenolepis nana?
4 cm
What is the size range of Hymenolepis diminuta?
20 – 60 cm
What distinguishing features does Hymenolepis diminuta lack?
No rostrellum or hooks
What is the size range of Hymenolepis microstoma?
30 – 80 cm
What are the definitive hosts (FH) for Hymenolepis species?
Man, rodents
What is the intermediate host (IH) for Hymenolepis?
Beetles
Where is Hymenolepis located in the definitive host?
Small intestine
Describe the eggs of Hymenolepis.
Small, subspherical, 3 thick shells, embryonated, transparent, light brown
What is the life cycle process of Hymenolepis?
Adults in the intestines release eggs in feces; beetle larvae ingest eggs; oncosphere hatches, penetrates hemocoel, forms cysticercoid; FH eats beetle; eggs are eaten by FH; egg hatches, oncosphere burrows into lymphatic vessels, forms cysticercoid, matures, leaves villus, enters intestine.
What is the pathogenesis of Hymenolepis infections?
Generally non since worm is so small.
How is Hymenolepis transmitted?
Ingestion of infected beetle, ingestion of food contaminated with feces (human or rodent), fecal-oral contact
What are the clinical signs of a severe Hymenolepis infection?
Inflammation of mucosa, anorexia, vomitus, abdominal pain, diarrhea
What are the treatments for Hymenolepis infections?
Praziquantel, Niclozamide
What is a control measure for Hymenolepis?
Removal of rats from houses
How is a Hymenolepis infection diagnosed?
Egg in feces; egg has polar filaments. H. diminuta does not have polar filaments.
What are the cestodes of human & rodents
Cyclophyllidae
* Hymenolepsis
* Taenia saginata
* Taenia solium
Pseudophyllidae
* Diphyllobothrium latum
