Q

2.3 - What are the 3 different reasons cell division takes place? (Explain each)

A

1) Reproduction: Asexual = 1 parent, offspring have same DNA as parent. Sexual = 2 parents, offspring shares characteristics of both parents

2) Growth: # of cells increase as cells grow cuz chemicals used during cell activity enter the cell through the process of diffusion.

3) Repair: cells die then are replaced by new ones, for survival living things need to repair themselves regularly through the cell cycle

Q

2.1 - What’s cell theory?

Q

2.5 - What are the 3 stages of the cell cycle (Explain)

A

1) Interphase: cells perform normal functions and its genetic material in copied

2) Mitosis: DNA is divided

3) Cytokinesis: Cytoplasm divides to form 2 identical cells.

16
Q

2.5 - 4 phases of Mitosis (Explain)

A

1) Prophase: Chromosomes become visible and the nuclear membrane begins to dissolve

2) Metaphase: Chromosomes begin to line up in the middle of the cell

3) Anaphase: Centromere splits & sister chromatids separate into daughter chromosomes & move toward opposite end of cell.

4) Telophase: Chromatids unwind and a nuclear membrane reforms around the chromosomes at the end of the cell

17
Q

2.5 - Why is it necessary for cells to copy their DNA ?

A

To ensure that each daughter cell receives equal amount of DNA
