3.3 - The digestive system, 3.4 - The circulatory system Flashcards
(17 cards)
3.3 - What is the function of the mouth for the digestive system?
Starts the process of breaking down food
3.3 - What is the function of the esophagus for the digestive system?
The contraction of the muscles slowly moves food along
3.3 - What is the function of the stomach for the digestive system?
Holds food and churns it to continue the digestion process
3.3 - What is the function of the small intestine for the digestive system?
Where most digestion occurs. Gives you the nutrients from the food
3.3 - What is the function of the Large intestine for the digestive system?
Absorbs water from digested foods, and the rest is your waste
3.3 - What is the function of the liver for the digestive system?
produces bile(fluid) which helps in the breakdown of fats in our food
3.3 - What is the function of the Pancrease for the digestive system?
Produces insulin (enzyme) which regulates the concentration of glucose in the blood
3.3 - What is the function of the Gall blader for the digestive system?
Helps by supplying enzyme and helps store bile
3.3 - A disease caused by a problem in the digestive system?
Diabetes - When the Pancreas produces too much or too little insulin
3.4 - What does the heart do for the circulatory system?
primary organ of the circulatory system. Regularly pumps blood throughout the body.
3.4 - What 3 tissues is the heart made of?
1) Cardiovascular tissue (Only in the heart and contracts to form a heartbeat)
2) Nerve tissue
3)Connective tissue
3.4 - What does the Blood do for the circulatory system?
Connective tissue found throughout the whole body
3.4 - what are the 4 components to blood? (Briefly explain)
1) Red blood cells: Transports oxygen throughout the body
2)White blood cells: Fight infections and illnesses in the body
3) Platelets: Small cells that aid in clotting blood
4) Plasma: (see) Liquid component of blood which is made up of protein and carries blood cells and platelets
3.4 - What do blood vessels do for the circulatory system?
Transports blood throughout the body
3.4 - What are the 3 main types of blood vessels (Explain)?
1) Arteries: Carries blood away from the heart
2) Veins: carry blood to the heart
3) Capillaries: Responsible for gas exchange
3.4 - What are the 4 main functions of the circulatory system?
1) Transports substances (Nutrients/oxygen) around the body
2)Carries waste from body
3) Regulates body temperature by sweating or shivering
4) Transports white blood cells to areas in the body fighting viral/bacterial illnesses
3.4 - Two diseases of the circulatory system
1) Coronary artery disease: when CA becomes PARTIALLY blocked with plaque
2) when CA are COMPLETELY blocked by plaque or with a blood clot. Your heart stops pumping because heart muscles don’t receive enough oxygen/nutrients.
