2.1 States of matter Flashcards
(2 cards)
States of matter
There are three states of matter: solid, liquid and gas
In solids:
The particles are locked together and vibrate in a fixed position
In liquids:
The particles are touching, but not locked together and they move around each other
In gases:
The particles are spread out far away from each other and they move quickly in all directions.
Melting and boiling points
At a substance’s melting point, it will begin to melt or will freeze if energy is transferred to the surroundings.
At a substance’s boiling point, it will begin to boil or condense depending on if energy is transferred to the particles or the surroundings.
A substance can evaporate if particles have high enough energy and leave the surface of the liquid.
