What are the contraindications to strength training in cardiac patients?

  • Unstable angina
  • Uncontrolled hypertension SBP >= 160, DBP >= 100)
  • Uncontrolled dysrhythmias
  • Recent episode of decompensated congestive heart failure (acute flare-up)

  • sudden weight gain
  • Severe stenotic or regurgitant valvular disease
  • Recent sternotomy (<6-12 weeks)
  • Any symptoms which may indicate decline in clinical status (unstable disease)
