What happens at the calling of the fishermen?
Jesus began to gather his disciples
He told them they should repent for their sins and that the kingdom of God was at hand

Seen as traitors as they worked for the Romans
Usually corrupt and would take extra money to keep for themselves
They frequently mixed with gentiles, which made them unclean according to Jewish law

Christian’s believe they can learn from the unhesitating response which the disciples gave to Jesus
Jesus showed that those who were rejected could find a place with him and be transformed

Jesus sent out the twelve disciples, in pairs, with disciplined instructions that they must follow

They should respond immediately and without hesitation when called
They must leave family, homes and jobs if necessary
Being a disciple is about getting out and doing service - to work as a player (“two by two”) rather than a spectator
Not easy being a disciple
Not a paid job - not about making profits, it’s about service
By carrying very little, it shows that nature of discipleship is itinerant
—> mean they could move on easily and take their message to as many people as possible
What does the sending out of the twelve mean for Christians today?
Jesus was sharing the responsibility and authority of announcing the arrival of the kingdom of God
—> he shared this authority to heal and remove evil
—> Christians today can share too in that authority to heal and to confront evil
