2.1.5 - Redox Flashcards
(16 cards)
What is an ‘Oxidising Agent’?
A oxidising agent gains electrons to another element or ion (oxidising the other species) is itself reduced
What is the oxidation number for Al³⁺?
+3
What is the oxidation number for Cl in the compound CaCl2?
-1
What is the oxidation number for K?
0
What is Reduction?
Loss of Oxygen
Gain of Electrons
What is the Oxidation rule for neutral compounds?
Overall Charge of Neutral Compounds = 0
The more electronegative in the compound will have a negative charge, the less electronegative in the compound will be positive
What is the Oxidation state of Elements?
0
What is the Oxidation state of Monoatomic ions?
OXIDATION STATE = CHARGE
What is the total oxidation number for NaCl?
0
What is the Oxidation rules of polyatomic ions?
Overall Charge of Polyatomic Ions = Ion Charge
The more electronegative in the compound will have a negative charge, the less electronegative in the compound will be positive
What are the exceptions?
Oxygen is always -1 in peroxide (H₂O₂)
Fluorine is always -1
What is the oxidation number for N2?
0
What is a ‘Reducing agent’?
A reducing agent loses (donates) electrons to another element or ion (reducing the other species) is itself oxidised
What is the oxidation number for a group 2 metal ion?
+2
What is Oxidation?
Gain of Oxygen
Loss of Electrons
