3.1.2 - Group 2 Flashcards
(13 cards)
What are Group 2 elements usually referred to as?
Alkaline Earth Metals
Are Group 2 metals reactive or not?
These metals are very reactive and so they are found on earth as compounds e.g. metal carbonates/nitrates/sulfates
What happens to group 2 elements when they react?
Lose the 2 outer electrons in the s sub shell to form 2+ ions and become stable
What kind of reactions do Group 2 elements take part in?
Redox reactions as Group 2 metals are reducing agents
What happens to reactivity as you go down group 2?
Increases
Why will Group 2 elements get more reactive as we go down the group?
its easier for them to lose the two outer most electrons because:
Atomic Radius Increases
Nuclear Attraction Decreases
Electron Shielding Increases
What are some uses of Group 2 elements?
- Medicine
- Agriculture
Do group 2 elements get oxidised or reduced?
Oxidised
What type of bonds are group 2 elements likely to form?
Ionic bonds
How do group 2 elements get extracted?
Electrolysis, Phytomining, Bioleaching
How are group 2 elements found?
Found in ores as metal carbonates, sulfates & nitrates.
Why do group 2 elements have high melting & boiling points?
Strong metallic bonds
What do the metallic bonds in group 2 elements form (structure-wise)?
giant metallic lattice
