2.3 Heart structure and function Flashcards
(15 cards)
What does it mean if the heart is a double pump?
This means it is divided in two by an internal septum making the right and left sides separate.
Where does the right side of the heart pump blood to?
To the lungs.
Where does the left side of the heart pump blood to?
To the body.
What are the two top chambers called?
Atria.
What are the two sides of the heart separated by?
The septum.
What are the walls of each chamber made of?
Myocardium.
Does myocardium tire?
No.
What do the valves between the ventricles and the atria prevent?
Backflow of blood.
What is the general names for the valves between the ventricles and atria?
Atrioventricular valves.
What is the right valve called?
Tricuspid.
What is the left valve called?
Bicuspid.
Where does blood enter the heart from?
The Vena Cava.
Is the atria contracted at the same time as the ventricles?
No. The atria is relaxed.
What prevents valves turning inside out?
Chordae tendineae.
How does the blood flow?
vein → atrium → ventricle → artery.
