Classification
a means of organizing and analyzing a topic by grouping items into categories according to their similarities
Balance
Symmetry in writing or images, achieved in writing in symmetrical sentence structure or evenhanded presentation of ideas and achieved visually through color, contrast, texture, space, line, movement, or the placement of objects
Comparison and contrast
juxtaposing ideas or images side by side to illustrate their similarities and differences
Description
the use of words and/or images to provide details
Emphasis
the use of devices such as headings, type size, boldface, sentence structure, or the placement or arrangement of elements in a visual image or a piece of writing in order to direct the audience’s attention toward something important
Metaphor
in writing, the comparison of two dissimilar things without using “like” or “as”; in visual texts, using a familiar image in an unexpected way in order to make a point
Narration
Writing or images that tell a story
Pattern
a system or design, used in writing or images to make meaning, communicate, and understand
Point of view
the perspective or vantage point from which writing is expressed or a design, photograph, or image is presented
Proportion
the relationship of parts or the relationship of one element to another within a whole piece
Unity
consistency in subject matter, organization, color appearance, form, or some other facet of writing or visual images, usually used to help provide a clear focus on a main idea or dominant impression
Logos
an argument’s logical appeal, based on clarity, logical reasoning, and supporting evidence
Ethos
an argument’s ethical appeal or appeal from credibility, often an appeal presented by an authority in the subject, by someone recognized and respected, or by someone liked and trusted
Pathos
an appeal to the audience’s sympathy and imagination, an appeal that causes the audience to respond emotionally and even to feel what the writer or the subject of the appeal feels
Bandwagon appeal
a persuasive technique that offers the audience a sense of belonging or inclusion
