What is Campari?

A

Campari is an alcoholic liqueur, considered an apéritif (20.5%, 21%, 24%, 25%, or 28% ABV, depending on the country in which it is sold), obtained from the infusion of herbs and fruit (including chinotto and cascarilla) in alcohol and water. It is a bitter characterised by its dark red colour.

What is Vermouth?

A

Vermouth (UK /ˈvɜrməθ/;[1] or US /vərˈmuːθ/ ver-MOOTH) is an aromatized fortified wine flavored with various botanicals (roots, barks, flowers, seeds, herbs, spices). The modern versions of the beverage were first produced in the mid to late 18th century in Turin, Italy.[2] While vermouth was traditionally used for medicinal purposes, its true claim to fame is as an aperitif, with fashionable cafes in Turin serving it to guests around the clock.[2] However, in the late 1800s it became popular with bartenders as a key ingredient in many classic cocktails that have survived to date,[3][4] such as the Martini, the Manhattan and the Negroni. In addition to being consumed as an aperitif or cocktail ingredient, vermouth is sometimes used as an alternative white wine in cooking.

Historically, there have been two main types of vermouth, sweet and dry.[5] Resulting from demand and competition, vermouth manufacturers (e.g., Noilly Prat and Cinzano) have created additional styles, including extra-dry white, sweet white (bianco), red, amber (ambre or rosso), and rosé.[4] Vermouth is produced by starting with a base of a neutral grape wine or unfermented wine must. Each manufacturer adds additional alcohol and a proprietary mixture of dry ingredients, consisting of aromatic herbs, roots, and barks, to the base wine, base wine plus spirit or spirit only - which may be redistilled before adding to the wine or unfermented wine must. After the wine is aromatized and fortified, the vermouth is sweetened with either cane sugar or caramelized sugar, depending on the style.[6] Italian and French companies produce most of the vermouth consumed throughout the world, though recently the United States and even England have started production.

Pimm, a farmer’s son from Kent, became the owner of an oyster bar in the City of London, near the Bank of England. He offered the tonic (a gin-based drink containing a secret mixture of herbs and liqueurs) as an aid to digestion, serving it in a small tankard known as a “No. 1 Cup”, hence its subsequent name.

What is “Aperol Orange Liquer”?

A

Aperol is an Italian aperitif originally produced by the Barbieri company, based in Padua. Aperol is now produced by the Campari company. While Aperol was originally created in 1919, it did not become successful until after World War II.[1] Its ingredients are, among others, bitter orange, gentian, rhubarb, and cinchona.

Although it tastes and smells much like Campari, Aperol has an alcohol content of 11%—less than half of Campari. Aperol and Campari have the same sugar content.[2] However, Aperol is milder and less bitter. Campari is also much darker in color.

Aperol to be sold in Germany has an alcohol content of 15% to avoid German container deposit legislation regulations.

Spritz, an aperitif cocktail, is often made using Aperol.

What is “Prosecco”?

A

Prosecco is an Italian sparkling white wine, generally a dry or extra dry wine. It is normally made from Glera (the grape formerly known, itself, as “Prosecco”) though other varieties, such as Bianchetta Trevigiana, are permitted to be included in the blend.[1]

Although the name is derived from that of the Italian village of Prosecco near Trieste, where the grape may have originated,[2] DOC Prosecco is produced in the regions of Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia, traditionally mainly around Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, in the hills north of Treviso.

Prosecco is the main ingredient of the Bellini cocktail and can be a less-expensive substitute for Champagne.[

What is the difference between a Frizzante vs Spumante?

A

Frizzante and Spumante are two wine words most associated with Italian sparkling wine.

Do you know what the difference is between these two words?

Both frizzante and spumante describe the level of effervescence (i.e. the strength of the bubbles) in a bottle of sparkling wine. Wines labeled ‘frizzante’ are what we call gently sparkling, while wines labeled ‘spumante’ are more effervescent and fully sparkling.

Frizzante wines have between 2.5 and 3.5 bars of atmosphere/pressure while Spumante wines are usually between 5 and 6 bars.

Frizzante wines are known as ‘Perlant’ in French and as ‘Perlwein’ in German.

Prosecco is probably the most well-known frizzante wine style, though Prosecco wines can also be made fully sparkling (spumante).
