began to revolt against Spanish when they were put into re concentration camps. revolutionaries just wanted to be free of Spanish rule. Cleveland didn’t help them (at first)
yellow journalism
journalists use exaggeration and sometimes lies to support their cause, in this case, Cuban revolt.
Maine incident
In 1898 The Maine ship blew up in Havana port in Cuba. Americans blame the Spanish and it sparks war.
Teller Ammendment
Said that when US had overthrown Spanish rule, it would let Cuba govern itself.
Dewey at Manila
when we go to war with Spain, assistant Secretary of war Roosevelt calls on captain Dewey to descend on Spanish Philippines. He defeats the Spanish fleet at manila.

When we capture manila, we figure out that we need supply lines to Philippians, so we quickly annex Hawaii.
