Restorative Materials Flashcards
Etchant
Factors that influence Etching Effect?
- Length of time of etching
- Concentration of acid
- Type of tooth surface being etched
- Orientation of exposed enamel prisms
- Orientation of crystallites within prisms
Etchant
What?
Active Ingredients?
How to use?
Strong acid used to demineralise mineral components (e.g. Ca, PO4, & other enamel constituents) from enamel and dentine to provide micromechanical bonding to a preferentially etched surface.
37% Orthophosphoric Acid (H3PO4)
- Agitate for 30secs
- Rinse for 20secs to remove precipitants and sludge
- Dry for 10secs
- If contamination occurs re-etch for 10secs
Dentine Conditioner
What?
Ingredient?
How to use?
The use of weak acid to prepare the surface of the tooth or cavity wall for ion-exchange adhesion by cleaning surface of:
- Debris
- Removes smear layer
- Leaves smear plugs (to reduce dentine fluid flow)
10% Polyacrylic Acid (PAA)
- 10-15sec application
- 10sec rinse
- Dry but don’t desiccate
Ledermix Cement
Contains?
What is it used for?
Contains, corticosteroid (triamcinolone acetonide for antiinflammatory), calcium hydroxide, ZOE, tetracycline (dimethylchlortetracycline = antibacterial). Active ingredients are ether corticosteroid and the tetracycline.
Used as a hard setting material for pulp capping (the cement) or in endodontics as a medicaments during rct treatment and rapid relief of pain associated with pulpal and periodontal inflammations.
Viscostat
Use? And how?
Contains?
Is a haemostatic agent used to control bleeding and sulcular fluids.
Small quantity is expressed approx 8-10mm along the Dento-infusor applicator syringe, and rubbed with moderate pressure for darker coagulation to form until failure to produce any darker coagulum, fresh viscotate is then applied. Repeat if further bleeding.
20% ferric sulphate solution
Alvogyl
What, how?
Contains?
For treatment of dry socket and post extraction dressing for patients with histo of dry socket.
Pally small amount to cover base of dry socket and pack gently into place.
Contains, butamben (anaesthetic), eugenol (analgesic), iodoform (antimicrobial).
Note not to use for patients with allergy to procaine type anaesthetics or iodine.
Do we suture into place?
Duraphat
What?
How ?
Instructions?
5% NaF, varnish = 22600ppm Flouride
Used to treat those with demineralisation, dentinal hypersensitivty.
Slowly releases fluoride for next 48hrs
Patients do not drink or eat for next 2hrs following application.
Do not brush and eat soft foods for rest of the day.
Isolate, dry, apply with spot application
Plaque Disclosing Gel
Light blue = oldest plaque
Purple = newest plaque
