What is the relevance of lithium in thyroid disease?

A

Lithium is concentrated by the thyroid and inhibits thyroidal iodine uptake, iodotyrosine coupling

-alters thyroglobulin structure and inhibits thryoird hormone secretion resulting in hypothyroidism and goitre.
