what is ethnopharmacy
the study of substances used medicinally, especially folk remedies, by different ethnic or cultural groups
how are plant extracts made, what do they contain and how are they turned into medicines
- obtained when soaking plant often when dried in a solvent
- contain highly complex mixtures containing thousands of compounds
- to turn it into a medicine we have identify the active compound
how are therapeutic compounds isolated in extracts
- extensive regime of extraction and separation to identify the compound
- the different solvents are used to make fractions which even then contain a mixture of compounds
- it could be multiple compounds in in combination that give the effect
2 way observations of compounds are made
- side effects in clinical trials can give compounds a new use
- and retrospectively looking at or repurposing existing drugs
why cant rational design be used
- a powerful strategy but with certain prerequisites
- it is not always possible to use this route
- requires structural date which is hard to obtain
what is high throughput screening, what is it best sued for, what is a limitation, and a pro
- robots used to do screen more compounds faster
- good for a starting point but wont give you your final compound
- limited as the compound libraries of compounds is limited
- make multiple variants of a type of compound rapidly
what is rational drug design
the inventive process of finding new medications based on the knowledge of a biological targe
