What is a focus group?
A group of individuals selected and assembled by researchers to discuss and comment on the topic that is the subject of research
When might focus groups be used?
To understand perspective and motivation
Generate discussion about research
What are some pros of focus groups?
Joint production of ideas
Lots of information in a short amount of time
Many forms of communication
Allows ppt’s to bounce off each others ideas
What are some challenges with focus groups?
Researcher has less control
Difficult to arrange
Can be less detailed
Not completely honest
What is a photovoice activity?
Used in health promotion research
Uses interviews, group discussion and photos the group have been invited to take
What is Freire’s (1974) approach to critical consciousness?
- Critical reflection - encouraging reflection on their community
- Critical motivation- becoming conscious of the contradictions in the world
- Critical action- advocating for social change
What issues have been explored through photovoice?
Feelings (health, social inclusion, loneliness)
Experiences (homelessness, disabilities)
Features of the environment (people’s diet, physical activity)
What are some benefits of photovoice?
Allows ppt’s to reflect on the communities strengths and concerns in a group discussion
Deeper understanding of the community they live in
What are some challenges with photovoice?
Negative social concepts
Takes time to take all the photos
How is ethnography studied?
Participant observation, with the researcher observing the lives and events being studied over a period of time
