What is the economic influence of a primate city?
Investments - businesses locate and invest in infrastructure and need other services.
Migration - more jobs = more workers = more migration = more buildings.
Transport - because of importance, biggest airports, roads and rail way development = more investment and migration.
Define urbanisation
The growth in the proportion of a countries population living in an urban area.
Describe the change in urbanisation from 2010 to 2020
While most developed areas have had little to no increase in urbanisation, developing regions such as Africa have had a significant and stable increase.
Why will the level of urbanisation change from 2020 and onwards
Asia and Africa would have 50% urbanised and the other developed areas would have started to urbanise further again.
Define a megacity
A city with a population of 10 million and over.
Explain the change in location and number of megacities
Over 50 years the location of most megacities has changed from developed to developing/emerging countries. The number of megacities has also increased Drastically.
Where has the greatest growth of megacities occurred.
Most megacities are in emerging countries such as India due to an attraction of jobs.
Define a primate city
A city so important to a country that it dominates its region economically, financially and politically.
Why is a primate city so popular
A primate city is popular due to people wanting to move there for its opportunities
Two factors that have caused urbanisation to occur rapidly in some places
A huge growth in jobs attracting young workers and better services and education attracting more families
Define rural to urban migration
Migration of people from the rural area to an urban area of the same country.
Define and give an example of a push factor
A factor that causes the population to move away and ruins any chance of migration to that area. Eg - a lack of investments and services in that area
Define and give an example of a pull factor
A factor that attracts a population increase through migration. Eg - better paid jobs
Explain why some cities in developing countries are growing.
Cities in developing countries would be the only areas offering well paid and well educated jobs. Meaning a lot of people are moving.
Explain why cities in developed countries are growing
Cities in developed countries are growing through natural increases and international and national migration as they have the best jobs available
Difference between the growth of Kampala and new york
Kampala has most of its increase from national and natural increase while new york has a range of national, international and natural increase.
Why is Detroit shrinking
Due to the biggest motoring company going automatic and bringing its supplies from abroad, this meant most people were unemployed and the rich moved away to the suburbs while the poor were forced to stay as they cannot sell their homes.
Define informal and formal economies
Informal - comes from unregular, unofficial and informal jobs where no records are kept and they have no contacts or employers rights.
Formal - comes from legal standards, that include paying taxes and contracts from an official business.
Give an example and name the different name sectors
Primary - farmer
Secondary - car manufacturing
Tertiary - lawyer, waiter
Quaternary - scientist.
Describe the change as a country goes from a developing to a developed country.
As a country developes more its economy becomes more official, working conditions become safer and better and most primary and secondary sectors are abandoned.
