3.1.1-Monomers and polymers Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is a monomer?
Smaller units from which larger molecules are made
What is a polymer?
Molecules made from a large number of monomers joined together
What does a condensation reaction do?
Joins two molecules together with the formation of a chemical bond and involves elimination of a water molecule
what does a hydrolysis reaction do?
breaks a chemical bond between two molecules involving the addition of a water molecule
What is glucose molecular formula?
C6H12O6
What does glucose exist as?
Two isomers-Alpha and Beta (same molecular formular different structure)
How is the structure of alpha glucose different to beta glucose?
On Carbon 1 Alpha glucose has Hydrogen on top and hydroxyl on the bottom, beta swaps them around
What is the general name for the monomers in a protein?
Amino acids
Whats the general name for the monomers in a nucleic acid?
Nucleotides
Describe the chemical reactions involved in the conversion of polymers to monomers and monomers to polymers.
Give 2 named examples of polymers and their monomers to illustrate your answer
Monomers to polymers-condensation reaction joins monomers together and forms a chemical bond and releases water
Polymers to monomers-a hydrolysis reaction breaks a chemical bond between monomer and involves the addition of a water molecule
Example-Protein and amino acid and Cellulose and beta glucose
