(7 cards)
1
Q
Define molecular formula
A
actual number of atoms of each element in a molecule
2
Q
Define empirical formula
A
simplest whole number ratio of atoms of each element present in a compound
3
Q
What is the anagram for calculating empirical formula from masses
A
E
M
M
A
R
4
Q
What do each each of the letters in the anagram for empirical formula stand for?
A
E - element
M - mass
M - Mr
A- answer (moles)
R - ratio
5
Q
Method of heating hydrated salts to work out its formula
A
- weigh crucible without and with sample of salt
- heat the crucible for 5 mins then weight again
- repeat heating and weighing until concordant results
- work out moles of water and moles of anhydrous salt
- find smallest whole number ratio to work out the formula
6
Q
What does a dot in the middle of a compound mean?
A
Bonded in some way
e.g. water from crystallisation in hydrous salts
7
Q
What happens to many salts after heating?
A
The colourful salts often lose their colour
