small/new businesses may have a flatter structure due to cost

- If the manager is authoritative, a smaller span of control and a hierarchical structure would be adopted

- what the business does
eg. military have a tall structure
Culture (Things that influence organisational structures)
- includes values, norms and beliefs
eg. if a business values teamwork, it might adopt a wide flat structure
Matrix structure
Working temporarily with other people from different team

- A goof way of having different viewpoints and skills involved in a project
- provides staff with opportunities to learn new skills

- Expensive
- Team members might have priority issues
