(14 cards)
Atom
An atom is the smallest unit of ordinary matter that forms a chemical element
Ion
A charged atom or molecule
Neutron
A particle found in the nucleus of an atom. It is almost identical in mass to a proton, but carries no electric charge
Proton
Particle found in a nucleus with a positive charge. Number of these gives atomic number
Electron
A stable subatomic particle with a charge of negative electricity, found in all atoms and acting as the primary carrier of electricity in solids.
Molecule
a group of atoms bonded together, representing the smallest fundamental unit of a chemical compound that can take part in a chemical reaction.
Neutral particle
a neutral particle is a particle with no electric charge, such as a neutron
Compound
A compound is a substance formed when two or more chemical elements are chemically bonded together
Elements
An element is a substance whose atoms all have the same number of protons: another way of saying this is that all of a particular element’s atoms have the same atomic number.
Chemical reaction
Chemical reactions occur when chemical bonds between atoms are formed or broken.
Chemical bond
a connection between two surfaces or objects that have been joined together, especially by means of an adhesive substance, heat, or pressure.
Carbon
a nonmetallic chemical element with atomic number 6 that readily forms compounds with many other elements and is a constituent of organic compounds in all known living tissues
Oxygen
The chemical element oxygen is classed as a chalcogen gas and a nonmetal.
Hydrogen
The chemical element hydrogen is classed as a nonmetal. It can become metallic at very high pressures.
