3.2.1: Dynamics Flashcards
(9 cards)
Tension
A pulling force caused by two or more forces acting on an object in opposite directions. The forces act to try and stretch the object
Compression
The decrease in length of an object when a compressive force is exerted on it
Newton
The force that causes 1kg to have an acceleration of 1ms^-2 in the direction of the force
Friction
The resistive force on an object that is caused by two surfaces being in contact and that acts in the opposite direction to motion
Thrust
A force from an engine that is usually propulsive
Weight
Gravitational force acting on an object, proportional to its mass
Free-body diagrams
Simple representations of multiple force acting on a single object, used to show or to work out the resultant force acting on the object
Lift
A force caused by the flow of fluid around an object, which acts perpendicular to fluid flow. Often acts in the upwards direction
Normal contact force
A reaction force exerted by a surface on an object, which acts perpendicular to the surface
