3.5.1: Newton's laws of motion Flashcards
(7 cards)
Newton’s 1st law
An object will remain at rest or move at a constant velocity unless acted upon by a net force
Net force
The vector sum of all forces acting on an object (aka resultant force)
Linear
Acting in the same plane, or in a straight line
Newton’s 2nd law
Rate of change of momentum of an object is directly proportional to the resultant force acting upon it and the change in momentum is in the same direction as the force
Newton’s 3rd law
When body A exerts a force on body B, body B exerts an equal and opposite force on body A of the same type
Impulse
The force acting on an object multiplied by the time for which it acts (aka change in momentum)
1 Newton
The force that gives a mass of 1kg an acceleration of 1 ms^-2
