The ANA’s Code of Ethics for Nurses states, “The nurse promotes, advocates for, and strives to protect the health, safety, and rights of the patient,” whereas the Public Health Code of Ethics states, “Public health should advocate and work for the empowerment of disenfranchised community members, aiming to ensure that the basic resources and conditions necessary for health are accessible to all.” The Code of Ethics for Nurses (American Nurses Association, 2001) emphasizes political action as the mechanism to effect social justice and reform regarding homelessness, violence, and stigmatization. There are commonalities between the Code of Ethics for Nurses and the Code of Ethics for Public Health. Both codes provide general ethical principles and approaches that are enduring and dynamic.
