What is birth rate?
The number of live births per 1000 people per year.
What is death rate?
The number of deaths per 1000 people per year.
What is fertility rate?
The average number of children a women will have between the ages of 15 and 44 (the reproductive age)
What is infant mortality rate?
The number of children, out of 1000 born alive, who die before their first birthday.
What is life expectancy/longevity?
The average age in years a person can expect to live.
What is migration rate?
The difference between the number of people who migrate in (immigrants) and the number of people who migrate out (emigrants) per 100 000 (or 1000) of the population, per year.
What is population density
The number of people per square kilometre. Its the total population of an area divided by the size of the area (in km)
What are the two things that relate to changes in population over time?
Natural change and zero growth rate.
What is natural change?
The change in population, either increase or decrease, because of the birth rate and death rate. This doesn’t include changes due to migration. For example when the birth rate exceeds the death rate there will be a natural growth in the population (if migration rate is 0) whereas if death rate exceeds the birth rate the population will fall. (unless people migrate in)
What is zero growth rate?
The population is neither increasing nor decreasing, the birth rate = the death rate.
