Q

Co2

A
  • Oil is diatoms
  • Animals don’t fix co2 because we are mostly made of proteins
  • The co2 is locked as fossil fuels, you unlock it by burning it
  • We are dumping co2 back into the atmosphere by the megatons

Q

There is a yearly natural cycle for co2

A

When the leaves and grasses are growing, it pulls co2 out of the atmosphere. So that is why you have an up and down level of it. Europe Asia and north america have giant land masses. South america, Africa and Australia are relatively large but the area of things that grow there are really small. Peaks are winters and dips are summer

Q

Changng temps

A

-On average all overt he place we are warming
The equator doesn’t experience much of the global warming
-As you move away is where most of the global warming is changing
-Most of the changes along the equator have to do with precipitation

Q

Changing temps by 2060

A
  • By 2060 PA should have climate like Georgia. The change of precipitation will have fewer rains but bigger rains when they do occur
  • Good: lower heating cost
  • Bad: increase in disease vectors that come along. We are seeing alot of diseases moving north

Q

increase in disease vectors that come along. We are seeing alot of diseases moving north

A
  • The assassin bugs that carry Chagas was no never recorded north of Mexico and now they’re getting a breakout.
  • Leishmanaiasis is a disease caused by a little parasite. There are two types: visceral and dermal. The sand flies are found in tropical areas. It breaks down cartilage so it eats your ears and nose. There are now cases reported more towards the US
  • Yellow fever, dengay, chicken gunya are all likely to make it to the US

Q

Co2 vs methane

A
  • Co2 is a weaker green house gas but it is,much longer lived.
  • Methane is a stronger greenhouse gas but short lived.
  • Methane is better at converting, but it is pulled out of the atmosphere quicker

Q

Increased co2 means more food globally

A
  • “If you increase co2 the whole planet goes up” this is not true
  • –Increased co2 increases production for some plants, but not all
  • Weeds respond more rapidly than crops. So increased co2 makes it better for weeds

Q

In the 1969s and 70s they predicted global cooling

A

Aerosoles tend to cool the earth because they are reflective. The cooling effect pulls it down and co2 pulls it up. The global emission co2 overrides this effect

Q

Influence of co2

A
  • Fossil fuels produce CO2
  • In the 1860s fossil fuels really picked up
  • Fossil fuels are petroleum, oil, natural gas, coal
  • You take CO2 and you fix it into cellulose, plant stuff, algal stuff.. You burn it and then you get CO2
  • Co2 is in the atmosphere plants suck it up
