Enzymes and digestion Flashcards
what is a catalyst?
substance which increases rate of reaction without being used up or changed.
functions of proteins..
1) structural components of tissue 2) hormones 3) antibodies.
what happens when enzyme catalysed reaction is heated above certain temperature?
bonds in the enzyme break and it’s special shape is destroyed. it becomes denatured/damaged.
what is the optimum pH for enzymes?
pH 7
which enzyme works best at pH 2
pepsin
which three places is amylase produced?
salivary glands, pancreas and small intestine.
which three places is protease produced?
stomach, pancreas, small intestine.
which two places is lipase produced?
pancreas, small intestine.
where is bile produced, stored, and it’s function?
produced in liver, stored in gall bladder, neutralises hydrochloric acid and emulsifies fats.
what is respiration?
It is the process of releasing energy from breakdown of glucose(in every cell)
equation for aerobic respiration..
Glucose + oxygen –> carbon dioxide + water.
uses of respiration…
1) build larger molecules from smaller ones.
2) muscle contraction
3) maintain body temp.
