A

All fortune is good. People have a tendency to become corrupt by their fortune. The wheel can then turn and take people from the top to the bottom. When fortune leaves, it leaves you w/ what’s real.

A

God already knows what his plan for you is. Brings up the question of if people actually have free will. Could be argued that people have will to choose but will ultimately be put on the path their supposed to be on.

A

Turned verses from the Bible and Christian history into song. Combined old english poetic teaching with christian teaching. Merger can be seen within the old english poetry such as Beowulf’s praise to God.

Christian elements in Beowulf

A

During every fight Beowulf puts his faith in God to protect him and ensure victory. After the fights they thank him for his protection. During Beowulf’s battle with Grendel’s mother, God shifts his gaze to the underwater sword. When the dragon awoke, Beowulf thought he did something to anger God.

A

The lair of Grendel’s mother is filled with sea monsters and boiling blood. Beowulf cannot hurt the mother with his sword and Grendel is unable to kill Beowulf b/c of his chain mail. Beowulf is about to die when he spots a giant sword. He kills Grendel’s mother and then kills Grendel.

Seen as gifts to give retainers. Example is the war saddle that Hrothgar gives to Beowulf that is a dynastic gift or the gifts that thanes give to retainers. It gives them glory but they must also use it to give to others.

A

Relationship between a ruler and his thanes. The thanes would pledge themselves to the ruler and in return the ruler would give them economic and legal protection such as food, drink, and prizes. The thanes must protect the ruler at all costs.

A

Part of romanticism. The knights would do anything for the lady. As seen with the Knight in the Cart. Lancelot rides in the cart to get to Guinevere even though he will be shamed by people because of it.

A

Woman would be older than the knight. Knight would have complete devotion to the lady. However is love was at a distance and he could not approach her with his love.

A

Marie de Champagne’s Court of Love was where suitors or men would ask the about matters of the heart and what to do. Stories from the court of love gave inspiration to some of the first romances.

Characteristics of Romance

A

Focuses on the pursuit of love and the relationship between a man and a woman. Focuses on some sort of journey or a quest. Gets into the thoughts of characters and can introduce new social values.

Epic vs. Romance

A

Epic: focus on the pursuit of glory, fame, and combat. Women have no major role and are seen as a prize. Focus is more on relationships between men. Ex. Achilles and Patroclus. Reflects the social values of a society.

the sword bridge

A

More dangerous bridge that Lancelot has to cross in order to get to Guinevere. Was a very narrow route could have been representative of the dangers one has to endure for love.

A

Symbolizes courage and loyalty. All values that are important to a knight. After Yvain saves the lion, the lion becomes his companion. With the lion, Yvain becomes a better knight who becomes selfless, courageous, and loyal.

Yvain’s madness

A

Yvain’s madness was created by his disregard of his knightly values. He did not have any loyalty to his wife or Arthur. He placed more importance on things such as fame, glory, and his reputation. When he lost those things, he didn’t know who he was and went mad.

the combat between Yvain and Gawain

A

Defining moment for Yvain that proved his new identity and knighthood. Yvain was fighting Gawain for someone else and not for his own gain. Elevated himself to the same level as Gawain.
