How might a patient with oesophageal varices be managed?

A
  • Acute management of bleeding varices
    • Fluid resuscitation, vasopressors (terlipressin/octreotide), prophylactic antibiotics (norfloxacin), endoscopic ligation/sclerotheray
    • Balloon tamponade/TIPS (hepato-portal shunt creation)
  • Management of non-bleeding varices
    • Beta-blockers (propranolol), monitoring, ligation
